A Surprising Catch.

Hamish and Breeze were fishing. The moon hovered over them high in the sky.  The river flow was slow.

“The river looks tired.” Breeze whispered.

“Lets hope the fish are hungry and tired.” Hamish stuck his fishing line in the water. The line ran from the water to a low branch of the oak tree. Near the top of the branch Hamish had fixed some tiny bells. “They will wake me when the fish has been caught.” He told Breeze who kept staring at the bells.

“I should have thought of some bells,” Breeze said and settled down for a nap.

They woke when a fox jumped onto Breeze’s chest.  Breeze sat up and shouted “we’ve caught one.”

Hamish looked at their fishing lines. They sat quietly they didn’t jig about in the water.  “I don’t think so, it was Harry the fox, blame him.”

Harry apologised to Breeze for waking him adding, “she scares me. And she is a little crazy as well.”

Breeze and Hamish watched the fox run across some stones along the river bed and vanish into the dark field behind them.

“I wonder who scares him. How shall we find out?” Hamish asked as he spotted a  stripey sock lying on the path close to them. They walked to the sock. Hamish sniffed it. “Lovisma, it smells of lavender and she likes lavender.”

“Lovisma loves her crazy coloured socks, why would she drop it here?” Breeze walked along the path and found another sock, this one had dots on it. They continued through the wood finding out bits of clothes here and there. A hat sat on a gooseberry bush, a  dress hung from a branch and a long scarf blew amongst the leaves in the willow tree. As they went they picked the items up and Breeze stuffed them in his pockets. He smiled because he had solved the puzzle.

“I know a crazy collie who likes to steal socks, but I won’t set Lovisma on her.”Breeze said. “I like crazy collies called Ellie.”

The sun was rising and the moon was heading to bed as they arrived at Lovisma’s house. Elegant and Lovisma were in the kitchen arguing. They could hear because the windows were open.

“I don’t understand who steals our clothes? I mean who would want to do it and why?”

“It is very bothersome. It means we have to keep zapping up new socks. It is  a little tiresome.” Lovisma told her older sister.

“What I don’t understand is how it always happens when it is your turn to do the laundry. It is strange.” Elegant said.

“Let’s be kind neighbour’s and return the washing.” Hamish suggested. “Afterall Elegant is a very kind witch.”

They emptied Breeze’s giant pockets and left the socks and hats in a heap on the porch.

“Go hide.” Hamish told Breeze.

Breeze ran into the wood, Hamish rang the doorbell, then hid.

Elegant answered the door saying, “Good morning….” She stopped and stared at the heap of washing. Then she did a little jig and dance on the front porch before pointing her wand at the clothes and ordering them to march indoors.

Breeze and Hamish heard Elegant say, “Good news Lovisma, you won’t be bored today, some kind neighbour has found our washing. Now lets make sure these socks  in pairs.”

The two friends decided doing nice things made them extra hungry so they forgot about their fishing lines and went to Hamish’s house to cook an extra large breakfast.

Breeze has a nasty moment.

It was Halloween. Breeze, the ogre, was not happy. He had put a basket of cupcakes,  baked by a very kind fairy named Tulip, at the bottom of the tree trunk. Then he climbed the tree to see who was doing what and well…he fell asleep.

When he woke there was not one cupcake remaining. Lilian, his niece, was running by and she said, “I didn’t eat them, Bob did.”stumble-on-basket

Breeze muttered, “I bet he did. But he won’t do it again.”

Lilian who liked Bob ran back to Breeze, “please Mr. Breeze don’t hurt Bob. He is a very cuddly dog.”

Breeze frowned. He knew something had to be done or the dog would eat every cupcake he found in the wood.

Breeze went in search of Lovisma which was not normal because this mischievous witch was not his favorite witch. But on this occasion Breeze needed her help.

Much later, he left Lovisma’s house with a smile on his face. “That stupid fat dog won’t be able to find any cupcakes for a while.”

He glanced at the picture Lovisma had given him of poor Bob, and smiled. “That will teach you for eating all of my pumpkin cupcakes.”

Though Bob didn’t look happy, Breeze did wonder what Sara was smiling about,

Breeze discovers a scary thing – And makes two new friends.

At almost seven foot tall, Breeze is not afraid or so he believed until the morning he almost trod on the scariest looking object he has ever seen.

He was walking slowly. The reason for this was simple. He could hear an unusual sound. It wasn’t the usual morning sound of bee’s buzzing or Mrs. Groundsel shouting at her grand children to hurry up and get out of bed. No this was a tiny sound that echoed inside his head.  The voice was high pitched and all he could hear was “No, Lizzie I said no.”

Who is Lizzie? He wondered. And looked down – then he saw a small tea pot. He questioned if this was Lizzie. A tea pot was for making tea.

The mention of tea reminded him why he was walking towards the witches house. They had invited him to come visit them and enjoy breakfast.  As Elegant witch was a very brilliant cook, Breeze was looking forward to his breakfast. He picked up his pace and as he did so he heard the same tin high pitched voice say, “We should have taken a left at the fork in the river not a right.” Breeze decided to leave them lost, whoever them was. He trundled on a little faster and soon smelt, pancakes, raspberry jam and berry compote much to his delight.

When he arrived it was to discover there was an argument taking place between the two witches. “Did you send the invitations to them Lovisma?” Elegant stood with a wooden spoon twitching on the table before her. Breeze noticed the spoon was keeping pace with her right foot which was tapping the ground.

“I did. It is not my fault if our stupid relations don’t want to come and visit us. They probably think you clean too much and don’t want to be bossed about.” Lovisma said.

Elegant was now looking angry and Breeze considered sneaking away however Lovisma spotted him. “Hello Mr. Breeze, would you like some of Elegants amazing pancakes?”

In answer Breeze sat down and held out a plate. When he had eaten six pancakes and drank three mugs of apple juice he said, “What relations are you missing?”

“We are not missing them, they were invited, I think” Elegant paused to look at her sister. “To come and visit with us.”

“And they didn’t bother so there is more for Breeze and me.” As Lovisma spoke there was a soft pink hiss of smoke and there before them appeared – Lizzie the teapot.

Breeze smiled. “It’s okay if they are teapots. I like tea.” He said.

Lovisma held onto her hat and laughed so much she rolled off her seat. “They are not teapots, it is their house.” Bending low she shouted “Come out and hurry up we have almost eaten all of your breakfast.”

There were two loud pops followed by rainbow coloured smoke and two large smiling witches appeared before him.

Breeze decided they were too big for a tea pot and decided not to ask any questions but to eat as many pancakes as he could before they ate them.

Breeze and the thief.

It sounded like the sky was grumbling but Hamish knew it was Breeze shouting. He decided to visit Breeze.

Hamish was huffing and puffing when he arrived at the cave to find Breeze staring at a fairy cake.

“Thank you.” Hamish said.

Breeze said, “It’s not for you. This is the last one. A thief stole the rest along with my peppermint tea.”

“Maybe they were lost or hungry,” Hamish suggested. “You know you should always give to those who have less than you do.”

“Hmm.  When they steal my stuff they have more than me. ” Breeze bent low and looked into Hamish’s eyes. “So what do I do?”

Hamish smiled. “We should ask someone smart like Elegant or Tulip. ”

“Perhaps Elegant is the one to visit first.” Breeze suggested.”Tulip usually has a Fairy Group Meeting on Wednesday afternoons. Today is Wednesday.”

They found Elegant sitting on her  front step reading a book. It was called, “How to be  the nicest witch ever.”

Breeze said, “You can’t get any nicer Elegant.”

She was delighted and said,” Thank you. Tea and cake?”

They accepted.  As he munched on caraway seed cake, Breeze asked, ” Can you make Lovisma become kind and nice?”

Elegant said, “I hope so. Why did you come to  see me?  Are you sick?”

Breeze explained his problem adding, “I think it is Dandelion Bear.”

“I don’t know this bear.” Elegant said. “She keeps to her self.”

“Ahh  a t-r-o-u-b-l-e-m-a-k-e-r  .” Breeze said.

“No, we don’t know that.” She looked at Breeze and Hamish. They looked at their feet.

Elegant was considering the problem. “Have you asked her why she is doing this?”

“I have.” Breeze said.

“And?”

“She says she didn’t do it. But Spike saw her.” The frog popped out of Breeze’s shirt pocket and said “Ribbit.”

“We need a plan.” Hamish said.

*******************

Hamish and Elegant hid in the cave as the sun peeped over the edge of the earth. Breeze was asleep.

“He sleeps too much.” Elegant muttered.

A dark shape entered the cave. Elegant flicked her wrist and a soft light came on.  It was Dandelion.  Hamish opened his mouth to shout but Elegant said “SSssshhhh.  Follow me.”

Elegant  stood before Dandelion who was choosing six cupcakes and a handful of peppermint leaves. The bear didn’t see Elegant. Dandelion walked out of the cave.  Elegant said.  “She doesn’t know she is doing it.”

Hamish said, “Rubbish I saw her. You saw her.”

“She was asleep. Dandelion bear sleepwalks.”

Hamish looked towards Breeze. “He won’t believe you.”

“Don’t worry I can make him believe.”  Elegant woke Breeze.

He looked over at his almost empty cupboard. “Did you eat them?” He asked Hamish.

“No. But I did consider it before she arrived.”

“Aha so it was Dandelion.” Breeze said.

Elegant said, “First you should watch this.”

She pointed her wand at the wall.ie“I need to show the truth to give relief,

to this ogre who is bothered by a thief.”

As Breeze and Hamish stared at the wall they saw an image of Dandelion walk into the cave. When the light dimmed. Breeze turned to them. “She was sleeping but still she has to see the crumbs and empty cases when she wakes.”

Elegant said, “Lets go and find out.”

They walked along the mountain path to Dandelions home.  They tiptoed inside.

Elegant waved her wand and said,

“Please don’t let us make a sound or she will take fright

an angry bear is not a pretty sight.”

Dandelion began to snore. Her paws were tucked under her head and a group of mice were neatly tugging the peppermint leaves out of Dandelions grasp. The mice scurried away.  Two crows swooped low to collect a cupcake before flying away into the early morning light.

The three friends walked outside.

Breeze didn’t know what to say. Elegant said. “We need to show her. ” That evening they returned to Dandelion’s cave.

Dandelion was horrified. Tears trickled down her fur. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know I am a thief.” She sobbed.

“No you are not a thief.” Elegant said. “This will help. It is a soothing potion. You will dream but you won’t sleepwalk.”

Elegant gave Breeze and Dandelion two large baskets of cakes and bakes. “These should keep you both happy for a day or two.  Dandelion if you come to my house tomorrow night I will teach you how to bake.”

Hamish looked at Breeze, “You will have a neighbour who bakes.”

Breeze said, “I must not shout at Dandelion ever again.”

A Fairy Princess lands in the wood.

Breeze was woken by a strange noise, he sat up and looked around him.  He checked to make sure the world was okay. The sky was blue, in the distance he saw a lot of sleeping sheep and down below the wood was as he last saw it, green and quiet.

Then he heard it again.  He wondered had an elf come to play a trick on him. He decided to check it out. Elves, like his friend Ainion (which sounded like Eye-nee-on) tended to be a bit nasty with their tricks, they had a love of seeing misfortune happen to others which meant others ended up wet or cold or frozen solid for a while.

He crept through the wood and finally spotted her in a large clearing close to the center of the wood.

It was a fairy. She had light brown hair, twinkling eyes and a huge smile. Her wings were gossamer light and her skirt was colored like a rainbow. She was playing in the sunlight chasing a large butterfly. Breeze watched her for a while and noticed the most extraordinary thing. A sunbeam was following her!

When she moved to the left of the clearing the sunbeam danced after her, and when she walked forward the sunbeam danced after her. He smiled. A pair of blackbirds landed on the branch beside him and came to watch. Soon others joined them. The wood was filling up with birds, rabbits and then the branch groaned as Lisbeth and Matt climbed alongside Breeze.

Lisbeth said, “Is she a nasty witch in disguise? Maybe it is Lovisma.” Lisbeth shuddered.

Breeze said, “You stay here and I will find out.”

He slid down the tree trunk and said, “Hello. I am Breeze. ”

The fairy stopped moving and stared at him. She looked frightened.

Breeze said, “We were wondering who you are? We know the other fairies in the wood.” As he spoke he sat on the ground.

The tiny fairy seemed to relax when Breeze sat down. She said, “I am Daisy-Lyah. My job is to catch sunbeams and deliver them to woods. I do this every day. It is a tiring job. I stopped for a rest and found him.” She pointed at the large butterfly.

Lisbeth came to sit beside Breeze. “I never heard of a Fairy who was allowed to catch sunbeams.” Breeze said. “I thought only Princess’ were allowed to do that.”

“My full name is Princess Daisy-Lyah.” Daisy-Lyah said. “But if I say that people laugh. And I don’t like people laughing at me.”

“I won’t laugh cos it is a beautiful name. I’m Lisbeth. Can I play too?” Lisbeth asked.

Daisy-Lyah said, “Yes please it is always better when more people play.”

And so it was that Lisbeth found a new playmate. Daisy-Lyah came often to the wood after that and Tulip always made sure there was plenty of toffee topped fairy cakes for Daisy-Lyah to eat and take home with her.
